Meet Captain Christopher Hobson

Recommended Posts

We first meet Christopher Hobson when he was a lieutenant commander assigned to the Sutherland in the TNG two-part episode "Redemption".  Hobson, played by actor Timothy Carhart, was the officer who was the main antagonist of Lieutenant Commander Data, questioning the ability and competence of the android to command the starship.  Later on, Commander Hobson will become first officer of Captain Shelby when she takes command of the Sutherland, serving with her for several years before finally getting his own command.

In Star Trek: Perseus, Chris Hobson finally gets a ship of his own, the Intrepid-class starship, Perseus.  Hobson exhibits a calm and deliberate exterior, earning for himself the moniker, "Iceman."  However, this outwards facade hides deep emotional turmoil.  A widower, Chris lost his wife, Natalie in a shuttle accident, taking years to recover.  Eventually, he begins a relationship with the Sutherland's Deltan operations officer, Anara Rysyl, who will eventually become his first officer on the Perseus.  However, their relationship does not long survive their promotions and reassignments as shortly thereafter, a situation arises on the planet 892-IV that tears the pair apart.  Hobson enjoys bridge and is part of a regular bridge circle including his first officer, the Vulcan tactical/security chief, T'Pren, and chief medical officer Helen Nor as regular participants with a rotating group of others who are frequently invited.  Chris is also a classical scholar, possessing several genuine leather bound books of philosophy, history, and literature.  Hobson is also fluent in Latin and classic Greek and is familiar with Egyptian hieroglyphics.  While punctilious and a stickler for detail, surprisingly, Hobson allows his department heads a great deal of leeway in running their divisions--provided they meet his very exacting expectations.  In a recent mission involving a Klingon attack on a backward planet, Hobson also proved most adept at dealing with fellow starship captains of remarkably different personalities.  A mystery wrapped in a puzzle wrapped in an enigma--Christopher Hobson can be a most unfathomable individual--which is just the way he likes it.

Bridge? Really? Who taught him that, his grandma?

No but seriously, it actually kinda makes sense for this character. It fits the Iceman image. I like to see more about his emotional turmoil. Maybe we'll see him crack a few times. That be very interesting.

But you gotta admire his mental discipline which can probably rival that of a Vulcan.

Lastly I can't help but wonder if some of his more prejudice ways which he displayed so openly during his confrontations with Data are still lingering somewhere beneath the surface.

Its good to see Elizabeth's former XO Christopher Hobson receive his forth pip and a solid command like the Perseus, an Intrepid class cruiser whose primary mission was exploration and science related tasks! I look forward to more stories about its crew including Angela"Treasure" Barrows! ;)
